Why 4K and Above?
Colleagues often ask why 4K? What's the point? We can't tell the difference anyway. Is HD not good enough? We don't have a UHD monitor or TV anyway, so what's the point of going the hassle of filming and editing high res footage, dealing with huge file sizes that take a lots of space?
We at Stranger Than Paradise Productions we film everything on UHD and above. With our much loved camera Blackmagic URSA Mini that shoots up to 4.6K, things couldn't look more outstanding. But here is where the argument begins: if you're not shooting on UHD and above, you're already behind. So we don't film on 4K just because we can. Filming on such high resolution gives us so much flexibility in the post-production.
- Filming on ultra high resolution gives you the option to crop the image (if you want an HD output).
- Colour Grading a high resolution footage that has a great dynamic range is a real joy and the outcome is truly astonishing and cinematic.
- Having more pixels often means better image quality. From our experience an HD that was initially filmed on 4K and exported in HD looks considerably better than an HD footage that was filmed HD.
- Finally, ultra HD monitors become more accessible. Thanks to our two powerful edit suites we're now able to edit and view our footage in true 4K.
